In Greek mythology, the underworld where
spirits went after death, usually depicted as
a cavern or pit underneath the earth. It was
presided over by the god Hades or Pluto
(Roman Dis). He was the brother of Zeus, and
married Persephone, daughter of Demeter and
Zeus. She was allowed to return to the upper
world for part of the year, bringing spring
with her. The entrance to Hades was guarded
by the three-headed dog Cerberus. Tartarus
was the section where the wicked were
punished, for example Tantalus.
