  2. spirits went after death, usually depicted as
  3. a cavern or pit underneath the earth. It was
  4. presided over by the god Hades or Pluto
  5. (Roman Dis). He was the brother of Zeus, and
  6. married Persephone, daughter of Demeter and
  7. Zeus. She was allowed to return to the upper
  8. world for part of the year, bringing spring
  9. with her. The entrance to Hades was guarded
  10. by the three-headed dog Cerberus. Tartarus
